Coming in 2021
The Camino de Santiago, The Camino Walk, or just simply El Camino is a classic walking tour following in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims who ventured from all parts of Europe to the city of Compostela, Spain. Tradition holds that the Apostle James evangelized Spain and after his martyrdom, his followers brought his remains to the town of Compostela in Northwest Spain.
There are six main routes to walk the Camino today. The most popular route is the French Way or Camino Frances of which we will be walking the last 100 kms (approximately 60 miles). We will begin in the city of Sarria and pass through four other cities and towns (Portomarin, Palas de Rei, Arzua, Rua) before reaching our final destination, the Cathedral of Santiago at Compostela. Our guides will ensure that our luggage reaches our hotels each day, ensuring that we only carry what we need for the day’s walk. At our hotels, we will enjoy breakfast in the morning before departing and dinner in the evening after the day’s adventure. Lunch will be along the way at rest stops and timeworn Inns that have served pilgrims for centuries. Our accommodations will be simple but comfortable, with one or two persons per room. Aside from providing us with transportation to and from the airport, our guides will also provide 24-hour assistance wherever we are along the Camino to ensure that we are well cared for should any emergencies arise.
Camino participants do not have to be athletes or in top physical shape, though it’s advised that you be able to walk for 10-15 miles per day. Each day we’ll begin our walk with a prayer, and in the evening at dinner or thereafter, the group will meet for a short period of reflection on the day’s physical and spiritual journeys.
The Camino pilgrimage with the Franciscan Missionary Union includes airfare, ground transportation to and from the airport in Spain, all meals, and all accommodations.
